The jury members
Chris Hallien, coffee quality specialist, Q-Grader
He is a well-versed coffee professional with experience spanning the coffee industry from origin country to consumption.
Over the course of his career Chris has held the positions as Director of Coffee, Director of Roasting and Specialist, Commodities Quality Assurance with two very successful North American coffee roistering companies. He was employed as the Coffee Expert / R&D Coffee Scientist for a large multi-national coffee brand working with their global drinks segment. For several years prior to this, Chris was the Director of Coffee Operations for a coffee laboratory dedicated to the analytical, chemical and sensory analysis of coffee.
Chris is one of a few coffee professionals licensed to grade and assess coffee quality for both the Specialty Coffee industry (Q-Grader) as well as the Commercial Coffee industry for the New York Board of Trade (Coffee “C” Grader). He also holds a certificate in Applied Sensory & Consumer Science from UC Davis.
Chris has worked with several organizations on international projects helping to improve farm-level practices, increase the quality and consistency of coffees being produced and provide training to coffee growers. He has served on several international coffee panels including the much esteemed Cup of Excellence jury.
Skip Finley, Technical Director/Partner Dalla Corte Espresso Coffee Systems N.A.
Skip brings over 2 decades of experience and support to the specialty coffee & tea beverage retailer. His knowledge of the brewing and extraction process, and technical expertise in water “formulation” systems, has contributed to the success of hundreds of establishments in our industry.
Skip started his career in the specialty coffee industry at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in 1996 as the Lead Service Technician and Brewing Equipment Specialist, with involvement in research and development. During his time at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, he was part of the team that took the store count from 20 to over 200. In 2002, Skip left Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf to take a position at Cirqua as National Service Director. Promoted to Technical Director in 2006, his duties included teaching and training in the specifics of extraction in regards to water chemistry and coffee/tea worldwide. In 2012, he joined Dalla Corte Espresso Coffee Systems N.A. as the Technical Director and Partner.
Skip has been a leading educator in water quality for the SCAA for over 10 years.Skip sits on the Board of Directors for the SCAA and is now Chair of the Standards Committee, where he has served for the SCAA for the past 9 years, a member of the NCA Education Committee and has sat on the Advisory Board for World Tea Expo. He also works closely with the Tea Association of America and is on the Board of Directors for the Specialty Tea Institute. Skip is a past Member of the SCAA Brew Crew and is a frequent content contributor for SCAA brewing courses. He has been involved with the United States Barista Championship, World Barista Championship and the Roasters Guild in various aspects over the years. Skip is also a SCAA Certified Lead Instructor (IDP), as well as a frequent speaker at various industry events.
Voted Toronto’s Hottest Chef 2012, Jo Lusted is currently Spokesperson, Resident Chef, Contributing Editor, and Advisory Board Member for Clean Eating Magazine, and Food Producer on CBC TV show, Steven & Chris, airing on the Live Well Network in the USA.
Jo hosts a healthy cooking segment, entitled “Dish Do-Over” on Steven & Chris and will have a cookbook with the same name available at major book retailers December 2013. Jo is a regular Contributing Food Specialist for Canadian Living and Fresh Juice magazines and an accomplished recipe development chef, with clients including Yorkshire Valley Farms and Clover Leaf. Jo also stars in cooking videos and develops recipes for Natural Delights Medjool Dates. She was a regular guest on Toronto’s Boom 97.3 Breakfast Show with Humble & Colleen, and is a current guest on Vinyl 95.3FM. Jo has appeared on Global TV’s Foodies with Chef Angie MacRae, Peggy K’s Kitchen Cures & Workout From Within with Jeff Halevy on Veria Living in New York City, Canadian Better Living’s In the Kitch, Global News, CTV News, Til Debt Do Us Part, Matchmaker, cityline.ca, CFRB 1010 and has written for goodfoodrevolution.com and foodnetwork.ca. She has been featured in The Toronto Star and The Toronto Sun and was awarded a “Golden Whisk Award” from the Toronto Star, as her healthy version of the infamous Kogi BBQ Kimchi Quesadillas was heralded as one of their 10 Best Recipes published in 2011.
Jo has travelled extensively for her love of food. From Corporate Chef of a restaurant in the Dominican Republic, to the Chef for Indy Car racing teams in California and countless trade shows across North America in between, Jo brings infectious energy, enthusiasm, and charisma to all her projects and events.
An advocate of living a balanced, healthy lifestyle, Jo believes in unpretentious food, and has a unique down-to-earth approach to cooking. Jo Lusted currently resides in Toronto, Ontario, loves to travel, and is always on the hunt for a food-driven adventure.

Sam James, barista and coffee shop owner, Toronto
Sam James, 29, owner/operator of Sam James Coffee Bar, Toronto, Ontario. Sam brings to the table 8 years of experience as a barista, as well as a dense resume of competition placements, placing 1st in the Central Canadian Barista Championships in 2008. Sam has worked the machines at a number of quality focused cafes in Toronto, and opened the doors to the original Sam James Coffee Bar location in 2009. He has since opened 2 more locations. From 2007 - 2009 he worked as an instructor for the Canadian Barista Academy, teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced level barista courses in Ontario and Quebec, as well as various work as a private consultant for cafes in Toronto, and New York City. His range of experience with almost every espresso machine, grinder, brew method and technique, coupled with a pursuit to develop his palette and knowledge of coffees by origin make him one of the most well rounded in the field of cafe operators.
